Hair Daze

My hair is getting longer. I haven't cut it in a few weeks. I seems like it's grown out faster than usual. It also feels a lil' softer. I'm thinking of coloring it again, but I'm not a big fan of chemicals on my head. I could use one of those natural dyes again, perhaps. The major brands have glam commercials I love.

I look better with little to no hair, but I like to play with my image from time to time and make slight changes to my look. Plus, sometimes I like to run my fingers through my own hair. So, for now I'll let it grow, let it grow, let it grow...

Inspiration Via Claudia

When my ardent appreciation for fashion and supermodels are discussed, I'm sometimes asked why I adore Claudia Schiffer so much. Other than her beauty, style and iconic status within the world of fashion? I like that she's just a girl that was discovered at 17 and went on to break records (over 1,000 magazine covers) and reach the top as the most successful of her generation. Becoming number one is among the accomplishments I admire most about her.

Claudia Schiffer is also the first model ever to appear on the covers of Rolling Stone, Vanity Fair, The New York Times and People. Widely considered one of the most beautiful women in the world, her ability to please an international audience solidified prominence in her career, now approaching 25 years. It's a different game now; but after all this time in a very fickle business Schiffer, 41, is still a major player to this day. Claudia has been an ambassador of L'Oreal Paris since 1997.

Of course, I also have high praise for Schiffer's colleagues. Naomi, Linda, Christy and Cindy. They're all the top of the tops and still generate headlines while looking fantastic.

She's not fighting fires or making scientific discoveries, but Claudia's charm and affable disposition in an industry known for haute bitchiness is another testament to her professional success, which she's crafted into creating a business as creative director of her own line of clothing.

Claudia gives me another reason to dream. I don't want to be her, but she inspires me to be good to myself inside and out, so I can work to achieve my own success (and look great doing it).

Got my January mags and loving them, of course. As a departure from the bulky September issues, January mags are brief, to the point and all about newness. Yes, please!

In January 2012's Elle, Charlize Theron is living the dream at 36 and looking fabu. We share something in common: We're both PSAs for SPF.

In response to interviewer Janna Johnson O'Toole's question on page 82 about looking "exactly the same," Charlize says, "I'm a massive believer in sunblock. Massive. I wear sunblock in the winter, when it's rainy and gray out—all the time. And not just SPF 15; I wear 50. Five-zero! It's a huge part of my moisturizing routine."

She goes on to say, "The importance of sunscreen has been instilled in me from a very your age through my mom, who is aging so well. She's helped me make peace with the little flaws I have. It's really inspiring to watch her age gracefully."

Something else Charlize does, and what I need to get back to doing, is yoga. I got a bike over the past summer too.

"I've practiced yoga for many years, and it gives energy and makes me feel really great. A few years ago, I also picked up cycling, which is better on my knees than running. I've learned you're not ever going to have any real success unless you find something that you can really implement into your lifestyle and really love."

We have Apple TV, and it really is a wonderful product. As I was browsing a few minutes ago, I happened upon this Davey Wavey video about holiday foods:

Davey seems light, sweet, fun and sincere. Of course one can't help but notice his impressive physique too. I couldn't believe that pectoral definition!

Interestingly, prior to this recent discovery, I just had a home workout session of my own this morning, consisting of sit-ups and push-ups (followed by a fresh organic cucumber carrot apple juice). Now, with Davey's help, I can work my way up to a more fantastic body.

Davey not only covers exercise and fitness, I just saw another video of his about dating and relating. He's quite the online personality. I like him! As Wendy would say, he's "a friend in my head."

I haven't posted here in some time. Nothing too glam has been going on lately with me personally, but the world is full of boundless glam. From time to time I capture a fraction of it here; but until my lifestyle becomes truly glam (meaning, I don't work a nine to five job) I must make due with what time I can spare.

I came across this tidbit of my gurl, Claudia, who, as everyone knows, is a glam icon.

How does she do it? After all these years as one of the original supermodels, her poise and easygoing manner, matched with strong professionalism and natural beauty seals her face and body in fashion's pantheon. Claudia works it out!

Boston is having an unseasonably warm weekend; it is expected to reach the low 80s tomorrow. Today was nice too. These temperatures are out of the ordinary for New England in October.

Even though this weekend is warmer than usual, the autumnal cool has already made itself known. Last week there were mornings I did not want to get out of bed because my room was chilly. Add to this, lower humidity levels, which for me means: Dry skin. Cold air is usually dry air and it messes me up!

So, after showers in the morning and before going to bed I'm slathering on almond oil, neem oil, body lotions and other products selected to seal in moisture and prevent my arms, legs and feet from looking busted. Exfoliating once or twice a week helps too; I like using a loofah sponge on my body and a pumice stone for my footsies since they're both natural and not harsh.

Another trick that helps skin hydration is sleeping with a humidifier in the room. Skin is most receptive to moisture at night while sleeping; that's when your body repairs itself from all the things you inflict upon it. Of course, ingesting water is very helpful too; never forget that.

Though what I have is really a vaporizer, I'll make due with it for now. I do wake up with mildly dewy, refreshed skin. There's LOTS of condensation on my windows too!

Researchers are learning that skin works harder to rejuvenate itself on the night shift, says Alex Khadavi, MD, an associate professor of dermatology at the University of Southern California. "Skin cell regeneration is slightly faster at night than during the day," he says. Sheldon Pinnell, MD, whose research at Duke University more than a decade ago put vitamin C products on many women's nightstands, agrees: "Sleep hours are a potent time for your body to repair itself, skin included."

Here are three beauty tips for skin care in your sleep to add more beauty to your sleep:

Sleep flat on your back: Smashing your face into a pillow creates fold lines that eventually become permanent if they're repeated every night. Spending time on your back also helps counter the effects of gravity that accumulate during the day. In a recent study of 38 women and men, Japanese researchers found there was greater wrinkling in the afternoon than in the morning; they concluded that the face literally falls with gravity as the day progresses. At night, you get a chance to reverse that.

Stay hydrated: "Keeping skin moist from the inside out is a simple, relatively inexpensive, and quite effective moisturizer," says Pinnell. Drink six to eight glasses of plain water throughout the day and include omega-3 fatty acids (found in fish and nuts) in your diet, says Dale Prokupek, MD, a Beverly Hills internist and an associate professor of gastroenterology and nutrition at UCLA. To help avoid moisture loss from the skin while sleeping, turn on a humidifier. "I used one in my bedroom for a dry throat problem and soon realized my skin never looked better," he says. (Be sure to clean the humidifier often, especially if you're prone to allergies.)
Use a moisturizer after bathing: Seal in the moisture that the topmost layer of your skin has absorbed with a hydrating body lotion or cream. Because you're going to bed--not pulling on a silk blouse or cashmere sweater--you can try a body cream that's richer than you would feel comfortable wearing during the day, such as Nivea Body Renewal Night Cream ($10; drugstores). Just before bed is a perfect time to slather your feet--especially dry heels--with a healing, hydrating cream such as Aveeno Intense Relief Foot Cream ($6; drugstores). And a sweep of Sally Hansen Beyond Perfect Healing Cuticle Oil ($5; drugstores) on your nails will keep the cuticles soft and prevent tears. For a final moisturizing touch, massage your hands with Dove Regenerating Hand Cream ($6; drugstores).

Taking a few extra steps will help you avoid dry, cracked skin this season as the cold rises. Hydrated skin is always in.

Fashionotes, a blog I recently found and love, brought me up to speed on Jane Fonda's interview in Harper's Bazaar. The 73-year-old icon says:

On body image:
“I was raised in the ’50s,” she explains. “I was taught by my father that how I looked was all that mattered, frankly. He was a good man, and I was mad for him, but he sent messages to me that fathers should not send: Unless you look perfect, you’re not going to be loved.”

On turning 74 in December:
“Instead of viewing an arch — you rise, you peak, you decline — view it as a staircase,” she explains. “Your body may fall apart, but on every level that really matters, you can ascend toward enlightenment, wisdom, and authenticity. That’s what I’m going for.”

On her infamous 1970s mugshot:

Lavishly Loving LUSH!

Today, Britni and I visited LUSH's Boston Newbury Street location. It was my first time there. I shopped at LUSH stores in New York, and I'm so glad I have access to them here in my new city.

What I adore most is all their creations are natural, vegetarian or vegan, handmade and cruelty free. I also relish their delicious fragrances, colorful displays, wholesome ingredients and friendly sales staff. Their packaging and script fonts are fun too. Because they "make products from fresh organic fruit and vegetables, the finest essential oils and safe synthetics," visiting a LUSH retail location is always a pleasant experience for me.

My favorite product is their Buffy Body Butter (pictured here); it soothes, smooths and moisturizes! Tanya introduced my to it a few years ago during a shopping excursion after brunch. It is especially great in the winter because its made with Shea Butter. After using it, there's no need to apply lotion!

Britni shopped while I browsed; I do plan to purchase products when I next visit. I can also order online at LUSH.com.

What I'm Using Now

Moisturizing is important, especially as the years add on. If you're over 30, you definitely need to include topically applying moisturizer in your nightly routine. At night, during sleep is when your skin is most receptive to moisture and cellular repair.

My product choices vary depending on my mood and availability. Since I've recently moved to Boston (yay!), my entire collection of things are not unpacked yet. Right now, I'm using Nature's Gate Vitamin E Oil. It's 40,000 I.U. or International Units.

It is a thicker oil and glides on smooth; I gently massage it onto my face and neck in a circular motion. Sometimes, I massage it into my hair and scalp too. I glisten and glow as I go to bed with my skin moisturized.

Don't only focus on externals. Nourish your inside too with almonds, hazelnuts, sunflower seeds, turnip greens, tomatoes, pine nuts, peanut butter, wheat germ and avocados which are a few food sources that supply the body with this powerful antioxidant.

No More Fashion Victims!

Knowledge is power. I am shocked and appalled to learn of this "sandblasting" practice used on designer jeans and denim products.

Sandblasting, which gives jeans a 'worn' or used look, is
known to kill workers in garments producing countries like Turkey and Bangladesh where jeans sandblasting is done manually. The process involves workers firing sand under high pressure at jeans. Dust then enters the environment, exposing workers to silica, which causes silicosis in the lungs. Eventually, workers die because they cannot breathe properly anymore. There is no known cure. Some major brands, such as Levi's, H&M, C&A and Gucci, have already abolished sandblasted jeans in their collections. But in the 'global center of fashion', Italian luxury brands like Dolce & Gabbana have yet to publicly ban sandblasting from their supply chains! Thousands of lives are at risk... Join us in calling on Dolce & Gabbana to ban sandblasting.

What the HELL is this? No one has to die for others to look fab in a pair of damn jeans! Is this for real? I've praised D&G on this blog before, but I'll slice them faster than you can say "relaxed fit" before I support anything that contributes to the harm of underprivileged factory workers! If there is any truth to this, I want it stopped!

A friend posted the story about this on my Facebook Wall. I signed the petition and I want YOU to do the same. I'm sending a note out on Twitter too. I may not yet have legions of readers or followers or whatever, but be sure I'll use whatever resources I have to inform my social networks about this!

I also realize there are other serious problems within the global fashion industry that relate to human rights, economics and just plain decency. Well, one thing at a time. For all the underground shady things that go on with big business, using a deadly styling technique to sell jeans is very unnecessary.

The petition has 28,031 signatures as of this writing.

I loved what I just read about Manhattan-based facialist, Joanna Vargas in "Farm To Facial" featured on page 63 of the August 2011 issue of W.

Vargas "recommends regular vitamin-packed green juicing to her clients and has been known to whip up garden-fresh complexion-repairing masks in her kitchen." Yes, please! I'm a strong advocate for natural remedies and ingredients.

I do enjoy green juices; they rev up your energy levels and cleanse your cells inside and out! Try them. You can always add an apple or sweet fruit of your choice to enhance the flavor. Personally, I can handle the all green juices just as well as the fruit-based ones. Either way, if you're consuming fresh juices (preferably organic), then you're on the right path.

With countless magazine covers, dozens of lucrative advertising campaigns and unrivaled cosmetic contracts under her belt, Claudia Schiffer was once at the top of her field. As a true supermodel, of course she worked the runway too, but now: "Nothing" would convince Claudia to get back on the runway.

These days, Schiffer prefers sitting front row at the shows where she once had top billing. "Nobody believes me but I'm very shy—much better in small groups of people than on a stage with everybody looking at me. I understood that I had to do it when I was modelling, but now, since I don't have to do it, I'd rather not."

Although she was at times criticized for her walk by fashion insiders over the years, Claudia was and still is in demand for shows, which she graciously declines. A contributing factor to this is developing her new clothing line.

Models turned designers are no new concept—just ask Kate Moss or Erin Wasson—but giving up the runway for the design studio? That’s dedication.

Claudia Schiffer presented her début collection of cashmere pieces, created in partnership with German knitwear brand Iris von Arnim, in Paris and will even skip the March 8 Chanel show in favor of her new project.
“I'm really sorry to miss it, I always love to go,” she told Vogue U.K., “but I'm going to be too busy with the collection this week. I want to meet all the press and buyers personally—it's that kind of project.”
It’s an admirable sentiment for the supermodel, who insists her new life is permanently off the catwalk.
“Designers are very clever at trying to persuade me to do it each season and it's flattering that they do, but nothing would change my mind,” she said of getting back on the runway. "I'd much rather be working on this new project anyway.”
The collection is a small (for now) array of knits, from an oversize chunky cardigan to a sleek mid-calf-length tee dress in navy and black stripes.
“It’s very much in its early stages and I’m learning step-by-step,” she said. “I want the quality to be absolutely key and I want to go slowly.”
“The idea of it is effortless chic—it’s based on my life and the clothes I need. I have 15 minutes to get dressed in the morning before taking the children to school—I want to throw on clothes but still look chic, then I want to go from school to a meeting and then out for dinner by only changing a handbag or a necklace or something … It’s simple and lovely to wear but still really chic and very high quality—that’s all I wanted.”

In this tidbit I found recently, I was intrigued by the following quotes from Vogue's editor supreme, Anna Wintour; she explains why she recommends getting fired, and turned down British Vogue because, "London felt smalltime."

On casting models: "Gisele Bundchen, along with Kate Moss, is a phenomenon. I wish models knew they have to have a personality." Anna, I agree. Models don't have mystique anymore, their beauty is already apparent, but it would be a welcome change if they collectively garnered more attention for who they are instead of simply how they appear. It adds to their beauty, yes?

I once quoted here, "Beauty captures attention; personality captures the heart." How much more intriguing one becomes with substance behind their beauty.

Yet, we've all learned history repeats itself. Though nothing now will eclipse the tremendous star power of the former supermodels, new stars will continue to find their place in the fashion firmament. Those with notable personalities will earn continued success and longevity.

As a long time vegan and animal advocate, however, I must say I personally do not purchase products that have animal by-products or test on animals. Though the majority of tips referenced in the featured link above are fantastic, the first one listed promotes fish oil, which I refuse to use. However, the health benefits of olive oil, coconut oil and flax seed oil (which is rich in omega-3 fatty acids) are fantastic cruelty free alternatives!

Long before Gisele, there was Claudia. As one of fashion's living legends, the supermodel celebrates her 40th birthday today. It cannot be underestimated how this German bombshell came a very long way after being discovered at a discotheque in the autumn of 1987.

Macpherson, 47, whose impressive physique has earned her the name The Body, admitted that she only looks her best with a lot of help from cosmetics.

She said: "Make-up! It's all make-up. And genes. So thanks Mum, thanks Dad. Goodness knows I've spent enough time in the sun so my skin is not as fresh as I would like."

Macpherson, who is mum to two young sons, added that she also doesn't like to diet.

She said: "Usually I eat like a horse! I've been through phases where I've been vegan and vegetarian but as I get older I realise that not having animal protein is perhaps not the best way to manage healthy hormones."

Perhaps what? Oh, Elle why do you suggest you need animal protein to manage healthy hormones? Glam J strongly disagrees. Most flesh products are saturated in synthetic hormones, antibiotics, pesticides and and a whole lot of other junk, which in turn impacts the hormones in your own body. As you get older, that is the last thing you need to maintain good health—hormonally or otherwise.

Elle, you are pretty damn fierce. Part of me will always adore you as a highly successful, immensely wealthy model turned entrepreneur. You can do what you will. However, as such, J has a right to respond: Watch what you say, baby girl. That's all I'm asking, watch what you say.

If your "phases" with the vegetarian and vegan lifestyle have taught you anything, hopefully it is the power of your choices, words and actions; not just as a celebrity but as a woman of the world with an impact on society.

This got me thinking (again): People so often state what they think are the most logical reasons to justify animal cruelty. Killing animals just to satisfy your palate is one of the most UN-glamourous things a human being can do. You can argue against it all you like, slaughter is not the answer. Period.

Animal flesh is acidic in the body. You have never heard a doctor claim to the American population: "People need to eat more animals." Instead, we are repeatedly told: "Americans need more plant-based foods in their diet." That's because it is true, but many don't know, listen or care enough to take responsibility for their own well-being.

John Robbins, author of Diet For a New America said, "No one ever got a heart attack from broccoli and tofu. Every year more and more citizens of this country (at younger and younger ages) get fatter, more disease-ridden and just all around BUSTED. What do they do in response? Continue to "Supersize It" and pop pills to mask symptoms of a body in decline!! Oh, for Heaven's sake, wake up and smell the salad.

When it comes to better living, or simply life in general: Seek alternatives, research and educate yourself in order to keep growing and learning. There are multiple ways to get the results you want and meet your needs. See what works for you, but make sure you know what you are doing.

PSA for SPF

It's summer and I know you sun "whoreshipers" are all about getting your tan on, and you have the right to do so; Glam J ain't mad ya. And I am not gonna lie, that bronzed look is hawt. But remember, your skin tans because it is compensating for the damage you inflicted upon it. Just watch your face, that's all I'm asking: Watch. Your. Face. The sun will age you faster than that martini, Big Mac and just about whatever else you might do to harm your body (intentional or not).

Guys and gals, at the very least, invest in a moisturizer for your face with SPF. They're pretty common now, so you won't have to look hard for them. However, J recommends mineral based sunblocks over chemical ones—and of course those that are NOT tested on animals.

Read the labels. Look for zinc oxide or titanium dioxide as active ingredients. These minerals act as a physical buffer against the sun's UVA and UVB rays. You also don't have to wait 15-30 minutes before going outside, like you're supposed to do with the chemical sunblocks; they have to absorb into the skin to be most effective.

If you work in an office during the day and aren't outside much, you can get away with using a moisturizer with SPF 15. If you're outdoors more, go for SPF 30 or higher. Though, I recommend using one with SPF 30 at minimum no matter what. Oh, and wear it every day. Don't give me that "But it's cloudy" routine. The sun's rays penetrate clouds too. Wear SPF daily. Period.

According to Real Simple, here are The Best Face Moisturizers with SPF. And here are some recommended sunblocks in various forms, from spray-on to powder. You'll find products that suit your activity level. Also, take note of these picks for overall face and body sunscreens.

Regardless of what products you choose, the "golden" rule is to reapply! If you're outdoors, every two hours is ideal. If you're swimming or heavily perspiring, more frequent applications will be necessary.

Be good to your skin—inside and out—you'll look and feel your best for years to come.

This past Wednesday, Glam J purchased not one, but two copies of June 2010 Deutsch Vogue. The issue, dedicated to one of Germany's greatest exports, Claudia Schiffer, displays the supermodel mom in expectant glory.

My German is a bit rusty from lack of practice, but I'll enjoy translating all the articles and interviews featuring the fashion icon.

Designer extraordinaire, Karl Lagerfeld photographed the cover, which is quite fitting since he played a critical role in launching Claudia's mega-success. It was a Chanel show in 1990 where she made her runway debut and became Karl's muse and the face of Chanel for years.

The former hard-working girl said in a recent interview, "I used to work every single day and travel round the world. I worked weekends and I never took one second off. When I met my husband I said, 'You know what, this is important. I'm not going to work weekends any more' - and when I had kids, I became even more careful."

She gave birth last Friday to a healthy baby girl. This is the third child for Claudia and her film producer and director husband, Matthew Vaughn. Vaughn's most recent work project is Kick-Ass.

She was Iman Mohamed Abdulmajid when the American photographer Peter Beard discovered her as a young student at the University of Nairobi. Avoiding the Pedi-Scare - Do's and Don'ts for a Relaxing and Safe Spa Pedicure

It is that time of year; now that spring is upon us, sandals and other open-toed shoes will soon be out and about in full effect. This of course means pedicures will be more popular over the next several months.

The following is a press release I received about what precautions to take when having a pedicure. Keeping feet and toes looking in tip-top shape is important, but protecting them from potential harm is even more essential. Be safe and have fun!

According to most American women, a trip to the nail salon or spa for a pedicure is not just a luxury – it is an accepted portion of their weekly beauty regimen! With so many women including pedicures as routine, it is no surprise that the bar has been raised when it comes to safety standards. According to New York City cosmetic podiatrist Dr. Oliver Zong, “a pedicure is something I recommend to my patients who want to maintain both the health and look of their feet, but I warn them to ‘proceed with caution’ when choosing a nail salon to frequent.”

Dr. Zong’s hesitation is warranted: in October of 2000, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention investigated the first known outbreak of Mycobacterium fortuitum cutaneous infections acquired from whirlpool footbaths. As a prominent podiatrist in New York City, Dr. Zong has seen countless patients who have developed infections in their feet as a result of spa pedicures.

Dr. Zong’s Pedi-Do’s:
Do ask salon workers how the foot spas are maintained and how often they are cleaned. Take notice of their actions while they are working on clients to see if footbaths are disinfected with each customer.
Do pay attention to the time spent cleaning footbaths between customers. The disinfectant needs to work for the full time listed on its label, typically 10 minutes, depending on the type of disinfectant. It is worth your health & safety to practice patience at the spa!
Do check your skin for infection during the days following your pedicure. Open wounds may appear on the skin of your feet and legs and can look like insect bites, but increase in size and severity over time.
Do visit your podiatrist or primary care physician if you suspect you may have a serious infection.

Dr. Zong’s Pedi-Don’ts:
Don’t get a pedicure if you have cuts or abrasions on your feet or legs. Microorganisms living in footbaths can enter through the skin and cause infection.
Don’t shave, wax or use hair removal creams within a day before getting a pedicure
Don’t get a pedicure if you have bug bites, bruises, scratches, scabs or poison ivy.

Last of the Supers: Gisele Bundchen Talks to Vogue on Having a Baby, Tom Brady and Sejaa

Glam J loves the April 2010 issue of Vogue and its cover story on Gisele. Looking so vibrant, confident and glowing with success, the megamodel truly has come very far.

Though I never disliked her, I was not much of a Gisele fan until recently. The more I learned about her, the more I admired her success. Once, years ago, I saw her in person and we had a moment in which we exchanged a wave with a smile.

Quite similar to Claudia Schiffer in her 90s heyday, they both have German surnames, reached the top of their profession during their generations, outshining their counterparts, at least fiscally, with highly lucrative advertising campaigns and endorsement deals.

Already well-to-do from runway and campaign work (remember those sultry Guess ads?), Schiffer's career really went into overdrive as the face of Revlon, Chanel and later L'Oreal, with whom she still works with today. Gisele seriously cashed in with her long-lasting Victoria's Secret contract, which ended amicably in 2007.

Though Claudia still does ad campaigns, the mother of two with another child expected in May, no longer walks the international runways. However, her world record for the most magazine covers (over 700), still remains untouched.

As one of the five original supermodels, in 2007 Claudia noted times have changed and said the current generation of models are not major celebrities anymore. "I can remember when I needed four bodyguards to get backstage from a Chanel show just to my car. And that wasn't only me. It just isn't like this any more." Schiffer added, "In order to become a supermodel one must be on all the covers all over the world at the same time so that people can recognize the girls. That is, for now, not possible, not least because the advertising industry is very much taken nowadays by popstars and actresses. Supermodels like we once were don't exist any more."

Glam J is shocked and surprised at the news of Alexander McQueen's death, announced earlier today.

The news that Alexander McQueen has killed himself is particularly devastating because it always felt to me like he’d be the last man standing. He was restless, but so pragmatic with it I assumed he had what it took to endure the extreme situations he placed himself in. He was also an arch romantic with a pessimistic streak. It produced some of the most beautiful, shocking images in the history of fashion, but it’s a state of mind that can lead to endless disappointments. The death of McQueen’s mother last week would have validated his pessimism. It would undoubtedly have taken away his most vital support. It’s awful to imagine him trying—and failing—to cope, and one can only hope that, if he was looking for peace, he found it. For everyone left behind, there will eventually be consolation, however scant right now, in a body of work whose power will never die.
